We have always believed that (as there are few Kleinsteuber names worldwide and all apparently originated in the Thuringen region of Germany) that we are all "cousins".
In yesterday's posting of Kleinsteubers arriving through Castle Garden immigration in New York (before 1870), there are a number that we can't identify or find genealogically.
One such is Albert Kleinstenberg, born 1821, left from Ruhla, Germany, arriving in September of 1850, and immediately settling in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Later Civil War draft, 1870 Census, and 1905 Census all show him living in Milwaukee and with his name spelled as Kleinstenber, then Kleinsteuber, then Kleinstuber.
We know our Kentucky Kleinsteuber "cousins" originated from Ruhla, however they arrived a number of years later. Coincidentally, the Wisconsin "tribe" of Kleinsteubers arrived from Gotha &/or nearby Tambach in 1852 and immediately settled in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. To me, this being coincidence seems very unlikely, and more likely letters from Albert back to Germany resulted in the immigration of 6 more Kleinsteubers in 1852.
Anyone else with thoughts on this?
