Shana Greatrix
Shana Greatrix has shared some of her research concerning the origin of our Family name and the Greatrix/Gratrix Coat of Arms.

'The story of Vercingetorix, Saint Getorix today in France, is something we cannot prove. However, the name Gayteric or Greatorex only started to appear in 1066 after the Norman invasion of England. The Gallic name got preserved in Britain but not in France where names were changed, but Gallic place names remained such as Chamonix or Aix-en-Provence. Any time I was in France or Quebec I was told I was Gallic. It makes for an interesting start in any case, but the usual genealogical references seem to say it came from Great-Rakes. Perhaps both are true.'
*Shana Greatrix is the 6th great granddaughter of Joseph Gratrix and Elizabeth Osbourne

Greatrix Coat of Arms

Greatrix Coat of Arms The surname of GREATRIX was a locational name 'at the great ridge', a Furness and County Cumberland name. Local surnames, by far the largest group, derived from a place name where the man held land or from the place from which he had come, or where he actually lived. These local surnames were originally preceded by a preposition such as "de", "atte", "by" or "in". The names may derive from a manor held, from working in a religious dwelling or from literally living by a wood or marsh or by a stream. Early records of the name mention Augustine Brandon and Elizabeth Greatracks were married at Westham, County Essex in 1582. Samuel Gratrix and Jane Wingfield were married at St. James's, Clerkenwell, London in 1647. John Greatrake and Ursula Whitakere were married at the same church in the year 1659. During the Middle Ages, when people were unable to read or write, signs were needed for all visual identification. For several centuries city streets in Britain were filled with signs of all kinds, public houses, tradesmen and even private householders found them necessary. This was an age when there were no numbered houses, and an address was a descriptive phrase that made use of a convenient landmark. At this time, coats of arms came into being, for the practical reason that men went into battle heavily armed and were difficult to recognise. It became the custom for them to adorn their helmets with distinctive crests, and to paint their shields with animals and the like. Coats of arms accompanied the development of surnames, becoming hereditary in the same way. In many parts of central and western Europe, hereditary surnames began to become fixed at around the 12th century, and have developed and changed slowly over the years. As society became more complex, and such matters as the management of tenure, and in particular the collection of taxes were delegated to special functionaries, it became imperative to distinguish a more complex system of nomenclature to differentiate one individual from another. *Provided by Shana Greatrix

John Gratrix is the son of John Gratrix and Rebecca Dring. Family research conducted by Archie Greatrix and his wife Mamie is very interesting. They share the story of John Greatrix who was a veteran of the Indian Mutiny in India. John chose to take his discharge and returned to England instead of joining a new Regiment when his own was disbanded. Never marrying, John came to Canada in 1860 with his brother Thomas and his family whom he resided with until his death in 1910. Archie wrote that his great uncle John was a very heavy pipe smoker. Coming home from a revival meeting in the Front Road Wesleyan Methodist Church, John threw his pipe over the fence into a field. John vowed he would never smoke again and he kept his promise. John Gratrix changed the spelling of Gratrix to Greatrix in 1871 along with his brothers Richard and Thomas. Family research was conducted by Archie Greatrix and his wife Mamie. Photo is from the album of Norma Garvin.

Samuel Greatrix became ill during his ocean voyage to Canada.  I have included a photo record that shows the passengers listed were from the hospital.  I recently contacted OGS and they searched all records at Library and Archives Canada that would have had Ship names for arrivals in 1846.  OGS stated that Ocean transport in the 1840's was often by smaller vessels and no real passenger lists were recorded for any vessels until 1865.  They stated that Samuel Greatrix was sent up-river to Montreal by the very latest technology, steam boat, along with a few other hospital residents.  They said that the fragmentary information of the sort I had found is about all that remains from this time period.
