This is the German ship Allemania of the Hamburg America line which made regular sailings between Hamburg and New York in the late 1860s through 1880s. The ship was 315 feet long and carried over 700 passengers; of those, 600 were in steerage (belowdecks, no portholes, terrible sanitary facilities and only slightly better cooking facilities). Entire families were berthed in 60 square feet of space. A cruise ship it was not, no stabilizers, coal fired boilers, and yet was new (launched 1860) and provided far better conditions than many older ships.
In 1867, as shown on the manifest, the widow of Johann Theodor Wendel Kleinsteuber and 4 children (Dorothea, Amanda, Ernst, & twins Therese and Hugo) sailed to New York and traveled to eastern Ontario to join the 5 brothers who had already immigrated to the Actinolite area on the fringe of the Canadian Shield. One daughter stayed in Germany and her descendants are also in our Geni Tree.
