I have been approached by a newfound Greatrix cousin, Lee Greatrix, who lives in the UK. Lee has also provided information as to the background of the name Greatrix; from some small place named as "Great Rakes". The derivation is from the Northern Middle English "great", meaning "large", Old English pre 7th Century "great", plus "rake", meaning "path" or "track". In Derbyshire, the term "rake" is used in a lead-mining sense to mean "a vertical vein of ore" and from this sense several lead-mines were named, including the "Greatrake Mine" in Carsington.
Lee Greatrix is also a descendant of Samuel Gratrix (b. 1776) and his wife Elizabeth Hobley, as are all the Gratrix and Greatrix descendants living in Ontario.
More to come as I get additional information.
